Planning a direct mail campaign

Direct mail is an effective way of communicating with both existing and potential customers.

When planning a direct mail campaign, think about the message you are trying to convey. Are you communicating a new product launch, company rebrand or promotional offer? Or just simply reminding your customers of the products and services that you offer? Either way, it is important to make sure that your message is clear and any copy is easy to read. Also think about whether your branding is consistent with any existing marketing literature and if it is clear how customers can get in contact with you.

Think about your target audience – do you need to alter the message you send to your existing and new customers? Are you sending your mail out to different market segments? If yes, make sure your information is relevant to their business. Where possible, make sure your direct mail campaign is sent to the key decision maker and personalise your communications.

A call to action is a great way of ensuring that customers get in touch, whether it be to claim a free prize, enter a competition, or complete a form for further information. It’s also a useful tool to collect further contact details for future marketing purposes.

Don’t forget to measure and evaluate the success of a campaign and put anything you have learnt in to practice the next time around. Think in advance about what you would like to achieve and set objectives – but be realistic! Look at the quality of the responses that you receive, for example, do any enquiries turn to actual orders/new business? Do you receive more hits on your website or followers on Twitter? If not, what can you adapt for your next mailing to achieve a better success rate?

Sending out direct mail communications by post gives customers marketing literature that they can keep on file. Even if what you are offering is not immediately relevant to their business, it might be in the future. Don’t assume that if you haven’t heard from someone within a few weeks after sending out your direct mail, that it hasn’t been successful.

Think about what you are posting out your direct mail in. Remember that most businesses will receive some kind of direct mail on a daily basis. To make sure that yours stands out from the rest, why not go for envelopes in your corporate colour or with your logo printed on the front? Think about bespoke options in an unusual size or texture. Or have a message printed on the envelopes regarding a special offer, to make the recipient want to read the information inside. Remember that such simple details can make a real difference to the success of your campaign.

Personalise greetings cards this Christmas

With Christmas just around the corner, now is the time to start thinking about the greetings cards to send to customers and suppliers.

Many companies nowadays have their greetings cards specifically designed to fit with their brand.  This not only makes the cards more personal but also more eye-catching.

The envelopes they arrive in are just as important as the cards themselves, so make sure yours stand out from the rest in the post.  With a wide range of colours available, why not order your envelopes in your corporate colour?  Another way to make greetings cards more personal is to have the envelopes printed, for example, with a company logo or a seasonal message.

Envelope supplier, Xpert Envelopes, can provide any size, style and quantity of envelope required - whether you need bright red or forest green, metallic gold or printed options. Xpert Envelopes can ensure businesses find the perfect envelopes for their Christmas cards. Simply give the sales team the necessary requirements, and they will endeavour to source the closest match as either a stock item or a bespoke making.

Ensure your mail stands out with printed envelopes

Printed envelopes are a great way to make the mail you send, stand out from the rest.  Why not have your company logo or a corporate message printed on the front of your envelopes?  Or consider having a return address printed on the reverse.

Printed envelopes are also useful if you are planning a direct mail campaign as they enable your business to print details of a competition or special offer on to the envelopes, enticing the recipient to see what is inside.

If you are sending out invitations or greetings cards, think about having your envelopes printed with individual postal addresses.  This will avoid time spent handwriting or sticking on labels.

Most envelope sizes and styles can be over-printed as required, including four colour process, while special finishing or mailing requirements can also be accommodated.

Protect your mail with the appropriate envelopes

Ever received mail where the envelope was torn and the insert ruined?  Annoying isn’t it?  Make sure this doesn’t happen with any mail that you send out by using protective envelopes.

These are available in a range of styles, textures and colours to perfectly fit and protect the items that you are posting out.

For sending out gifts, fragile or bulky printed items, why not go for padded envelopes? Choices include standard white and manilla padded envelopes, through to metallic bubble varieties that will really stand out in the mail.

Board envelopes are available in 225gsm, 350gsm and board back varieties, and are great for posting out calendars, posters and brochures.  Available in a wide range of colours and sizes, board envelopes allow you to still go for eye-catching options whilst protecting your mail at the same time.

Gusset envelopes are ideal for sending out bulky items such as catalogues, books and prospectuses, as they allow for a larger capacity of approximately 25mm. Available with or without a window, and in white or manilla.  Alternatively, tear resistant envelopes are often used to send out important documents where it is imperative that the envelopes do not rip, and have a high quality look and feel.
